What They Don't Tell You About Building a Business While Growing a Family

Buckaroo Chew founder Jamie opens up about the real cost of building a business while raising a family — the hard mornings, the time management, and the grit that keeps her going.

What They Don't Tell You About Building a Business While Growing a Family

There's a version of building a business that looks good on a feed: clean product shots, a tidy "shop now" button, a founder who has it all figured out. That's not this post.

This is the real version — what it actually takes to build a business while raising a family, told by someone living it in real time. I'm Jamie, founder of Buckaroo Chew, and most days that means running a natural baby product brand with a toddler on my hip, a horse to feed, and a second baby on the way. Here's what nobody tells you about doing both at once.

It Is Hard

Becoming a mom has been one of the greatest blessings of my life — and it was also one of the hardest transitions I've ever gone through. Trying to be a good wife and a present mom, while also building a business meant to leave my kids something real, takes a lot out of me some days.

But it's also built my character in ways I never expected. There's a strange kind of accomplishment in showing up for both your family and your business on the same hard day, and choosing not to drop either one.

If you're a mom entrepreneur in that same stretch right now — the one where nothing feels balanced and you're not sure you're doing either job well — you're not failing. You're just in the part nobody posts about.

Time Management as a Mom in Business

Day-to-day business ownership is like working multiple jobs. For a lot of us, it actually is multiple jobs. Add in raising small children, and the math gets harder, not easier.

For me, that's meant waking up earlier than everyone else to get a head start, and staying up later once the house is quiet again — all while making sure my toddler still gets a normal, social, kid-filled life in between. Time management as a mom in business isn't really about finding more hours. It's about protecting the few you have and refusing to let either side — family or business — quietly lose.

Parenting With Purpose: Building a Legacy

Here's the shift that changed everything for me: I'm not building Buckaroo Chew in spite of my kids. I'm building it because of them.

Every late night, every order packed at the kitchen table, every hour spent learning a craft by hand — it's so my kids grow up watching what don't quit actually looks like. Not in theory. In practice, in front of them, on the hard days and the good ones.

That's the part of building a business that doesn't make it into a highlight reel: you're not just building a brand. You're building an example.

Grit: Why We Keep Going

There's always more to do. More orders, more growth, more hours I wish I had. And still — I wouldn't change any of it.

That's grit. Not the absence of hard days, but showing up again the next morning anyway. I look forward to the day we get to do even more of this, together, as a family and as a brand.
